Uncle Tom's Cabin (Stowe)

Argues evil of slavery through several intersecting narratives. Focuses somewhat on right of self-determination, but mostly on the more poignant helplessness of a slave to save himself from the abusiveness of a Simon Legree, in addition to the uselessness of good intentions, such as those of Augustine St. Clare and Mr. Shelby, in keeping their slaves safe from those who would harm them.
